Recently, members of the Prentiss County Council of Governments (COG) held their monthly meeting at Southern Diversified Industries (SDI) in Baldwyn. This meeting is one of a series of meetings that is geared at improving the relationships between existing industries and the local governments within Prentiss County. By maintaining an open dialog with local companies the council hopes to better understand the needs of these companies, which should lead to Prentiss County being better positioned for industrial growth in the future.
Hosting the group was SDI’s Human Resource Manager, Mary Frenn, and Facilities Production Manager, Paul Landon. SDI is a manufacturer of corrugated plastic products. Their largest selling product produced at the Baldwyn facility is Trimline Ridge Vent, which can be found at many large home improvement stores. This product is used in roofing as a more efficient, replacement for the traditional turbine vents. Currently, SDI employs 74 people and since January has mostly been running seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Besides meeting with management, the COG also was lead on a guided tour of the production process. Mr. Landon described SDI’s processes and enlightened the group on the highly technical aspects of their production lines. The group was delighted by the opportunity to view this process. The Prentiss County COG thanks SDI for what it does for the community and for the employment opportunities it has provided for residents of Prentiss County, since opening its doors in 1984.
TAP Alliance Supports Mississippi BEST Robotics Competition
July 27, 2011
The TAP Alliance is prepared to give a boost to get the best.
Economic developers from Tishomingo, Alcorn and Prentiss counties (TAP) hosted an informational meeting for local educators to gain more understanding of the Mississippi BEST Robotics Competition.
Mississippi Best (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) is a group of engineers, teachers and parents along with industry technologists who have joined together to motivate students in engineering, science and technology. It’s mission is to inspire students to pursue careers in those fields by competing in a sports-like robotics competition.
Caterpillar Reman Plant Manager John Mocny is on board with the idea. “There is not enough people in our area that are pursuing a technical degree,” said Mocny via conference call. “We struggle to find that kind of talent.” Mocny told school educators and administrators that Caterpillar believes the program is a solid one.
“The program allows them to be creative and we at Caterpillar support the Mississippi Best program,” he said.

ACCO Brands Corporate Board of Directors Meets at Booneville Facility
October 19, 2010
ACCO Brands' Booneville facility recently hosted their corporate Board of Directors for a meeting. This was the first visit that the full board has made to this facility. They were given the chance to see the drastic improvements and additions that were added during the 2008 expansion of the facility. The facility managers were also able to discuss the recent improvements to their production lines, which recently won a new contract for the plant in direct competition to manufacturers from China. This additional contract was captured due to total cost of production in Booneville, MS was lower than total cost of production from China. ACCO management touted that a main factor in their low cost of production is the skilled and dedicated workforce of the Prentiss County area. Due to the workers taking pride in their work the quality of the product is increased. This increased quality lowers cost of managing defects, minimizes returns, and makes customer support less costly.
There was a brief meeting in which several representatives from the surrounding communities were able to talk with the board. A highlight of the past expansion was given to the board noting the willingness of Prentiss County to work hard towards the development of jobs. Also, Congressman Travis Childers and Speaker Billy McCoy spoke directly to the ACCO Board of Directors. They conveyed a message of appreciation to the company for ACCO's desire to stay and expand in Booneville, MS while having many other options at the time. They also pledged their continued support for the company and expressed their hopes that similar expansions may be possible in the future.
